Brad Twiss on Portland Homebuyers and Heat Pumps (The Oregonian)
Heat pumps are gaining traction across the Pacific Northwest. The Oregonian reported in 2023 that installations in the region now match gas furnaces, driven by energy efficiency, climate goals and new incentives. The story also lays out the hurdles: upfront costs of $10,000 to $20,000, upgrades older homes may need such as insulation or a new electrical panel, and a shortage of experienced installers.
Neighbors Realty’s broker owner Brad Twiss told The Oregonian that buyers’ priorities are shifting. Most buyers used to ignore heating systems or look specifically for gas. Now, he said, “people are asking, ‘Can I install a heat pump here?’” He’s also hearing clients ask about swapping expensive gas ranges for induction stoves.
